Change the 10.0 in the end to 12.0 or 13.0 or 14.0, depending on what version of Visual Studio you have and you are done Congratulations, no more persky visual studio shell 2010 invalid license data. I did a Google search on the error message and found lots of reports of this issue with other Microsoft installs. Seems to have a lot of useful information, including a suggestion that an incorrectly set system clock or expiring time-of-year battery can trigger this. I'm less enthusiastic about the recommendations to edit registry entries. I think I would suggest an uninstall, delete the Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0 folder, make sure your system clock is set correctly, reboot, then reinstall. Let me know what happens.
Some further reading suggests that an install of Microsoft SQL Server can trigger this problem. Supposedly a reinstall of SQL Server Data Tools can fix it. I see a LOT of MS tool users have encountered this problem, but proposed solutions are all over the map and many point to Microsoft web pages that no longer exist. What happens if you right click on the link for VS2010 Shell and select 'Run as Administrator'? (Do you have administrator rights?) I will ask our VS team if they have any ideas, but as I said, the VS install is sort of a black box to us. Originally I tried installing Intel® Parallel Studio XE Composer Edition for Fortran Windows.

(incl. Microsoft Visual Studio Shell and Libraries.) 2013 SP1 Update 4 with my existing MS Visual Studio Express 2010 SP1/SDK7.1/SQLServer/etc. After installation, I noticed that MS Shell (Int) was not installed as I expected. Unfortunately this is where I started the nightmare of trying to install MS Shell 2010 (downloaded from MSDN website) on top of my existing VS Express 2010. Do not do this, it will not work. After uninstalling all programs related to MS Visual Studio Express 2010 SP1, SDK 7.1, SQL Server, and associated Redistributables (and MS VS Shell), reinstalling all (except MS VS Shell) according to (one thing to note is, originally, maybe a year and a half ago, I had installed all MS products according to the same instructions) and reinstalling Intel® Parallel Studio XE Composer Edition for Fortran Windows.
(incl. Microsoft Visual Studio Shell and Libraries.) SP1 Update 4, I am finally able to compile. On installation of the Intel compiler, the MS VS Shell was installed as part of the package. Thanks everyone for your time, Candice.

I am getting this error message when I attempt to open a '.sln' file.
The window title is 'Visual Studio 2010 Shell'.
I purchased sql Server Developer 2014 60 days ago. Have never installed Visual Studio on this computer.
I have followed all of the uninstall / reinstall instructions and the problem is persisting
It appears to be a very common error message by the google search. This is a show stopper for me and I am surprised that the solution is apparently so elusive. Please Help!

Reinstall SQL Server Data Tools or uninstall SQL Server Data Tools and install it again (if needed). For more information:
SQL Server Data Tools can be downloaded from the following URL:
Hope this helps.

I ran into the exact same problem with SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition and I did the following to resolve the issue.
Btw, did you install SSDT-BI(not to be confused with SSDT) on your machine? If not, you have to install SSDT-BI to open the .sln files. Unlike BIDS, SSDT-BI is not installed
during the SQL Server set up even if you have selected to install the SSIS, SSRS and SSAS components.
During my research, I have found the following.
1) Only 32-bit SSDT-BI is available at the moment.
2) .NET 4.5.1 is prerequisite for SSDT-BI for Visual Studio 2013 Shell.;
3) If you are encountered with 'Same architecture installation' rule failed, then install the SSDT-BI as new installation.
The following links helped me to resolve the issue.

Albert, For the first time in my learning adventure I am getting that SSDT is a part of Visual Studio, and one of these threads led me to the VS Express for the web, exactly the right choice for me as I do not need Visual Studio with the more expensive support options just now. It looks like I am seeing daylight as I am no longer seeing the error message which opened this thread about 'invalid license'. I fully intend to mark the answer when I come to clarity on what I did to arrive at this point.
Very grateful for the support community.
Still not clear on whether or not I am running the sln file to completion, which is probably my learning adventure as I am taking on online course in SQL server / reports.

Dear BIDS IDE,
Forgive delay please as I was carried away from project for some weeks. I fully intend to follow all your links and get back with you.
